Accessibility statement

Drafted on 23 March 2019

This accessibility statement concerns the Marinefinland.fi website maintained by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

The website is subject to the EU’s Web Accessibility Directive (2016/2102) and the Finnish Act on the Provision of Digital Services (306/2019). The legislation aims to promote equality in the digital society and harmonise the requirements for accessibility. The work aiming to fulfil the accessibility requirements is currently underway and SYKE aims to guarantee the website’s accessibility.

Current state of accessibility

We have assessed the website with respect to the WCAG 2.1 standard’s AA-level of conformance. The website meets the accessibility requirements in some respects.

The following functions are not accessible because they are not subject to accessibility legislation:

  • PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint files published prior to 23 September 2018
  • audio and video files published prior to 23 September 2018
  • online maps and map services
  • thirdparty content not funded or developed or supervised by SYKE

Some of the website’s functions cannot be made compatible with the accessibility requirements without significant changes and costs. Taking into account the fairly minor need of a person with disabilities in using the functions in question and SYKE’s limited resources, we have judged that compliance with the accessibility requirements would, at this point, impose a disproportionate burden on SYKE. Therefore, the following functions are temporarily subject to a derogation pursuant to Article 5 of the Web Accessibility Directive in relation to the disproportionate burden:

  • indicating the photographer’s name on top of a photograph
  • the Itämeri Nyt indicators (text equivalents)
  • updated graphs (text equivalents)
  • images drawn by hand (contrast)
  • image boxes (this refers to the box of the Unique Baltic Sea and Citizen observations)
  • tables
  • PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint files published after 23 September 2018
  • some of the infographics
  • the meriaineistot.fi and merihavainnot.fi sites included in the data services section as well as the section’s other map services.

We will be paying more attention to these shortcomings in the future. When we add new contents to the website, we aim to make them accessible.

If you would like to be provided with the website’s non-accessible data or services in an alternative manner, please send us an email to saavutettavuus@ymparisto.fi.
